I think your blogs are fascinating and very true! I think that indivual gay people and the gay community as a whole do have substantial clout. And, you're right, most of that is due to protective clauses in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and other legal Acts and documents on the provincial level. The gay community has only recently been able to make strides in the direction of mainstream tolerance and I think it has a lot to do with the kind of medium that is being used to inform the public....T.V. The gay community, literally, got into people's living rooms with the episode of "Ellen and Friends" when she came out on national T.V. to a viewing audience of I don't know how many hundreds of thousands. You are probably aware that channel 70 here in London is APTN (Aboriginal People's Television Network), which also brings a relatively small community (in relation to the Goliath mainstream) right into the living rooms of the mainstream. I think this is a smart appraoch to informing the mainstream because most of us have our eyes glude to the T.V. at least a few hours a day. I think that the APTN is breaking down cultural borders by giving mainstream society access to native culture while at the same time "they" are able to establish and demonstate a political, moral, and spiritual agenda that has been defined by "them" (I hate using language like "us" and "them" but, I couldn't think of any other way to explain it). Thanks for the great blogs! You should run for Prime Minister.
