DBC: Emphasis on Bilingualism
Posted by ShelJul 18
FYI: Voice interpreters were indeed provided for the presentations which heavily emphasized bilingualism. It is my opinion that the information presented is quite relevant to people of varying backgrounds including hearing or deaf parents, Deaf people, and educators.
The brief summaries I gave of each topic presented barely mined the treasure trove of information I received.
My apologies for not providing a transcription of this vlog at the present time, and I hope I will be able to provide that at a future date. Thank you for your patience.
Comments, which include constructive criticisms are welcome. Destructive criticisms and personal attacks will not be published. Thank you for visiting my blog!

Hello again, I like your “tip of the iceberg” analogy. OFC, too much information to share, LOL but I get the gist of each presenters from you. I wish I can share such info with my classmates this Fall. Thanks again.

Mike, hello again! Yes, I agree that kind of information is always valuable to share with those who are in fields in which they work with Deaf people.
Cheryl,
Yes, I will definitely add the vlogs to DVTV once I figure out how to do that.

Very interesting information about Bilingualism . I completely agreed that any education should teach deaf toddlers with ASL and English at same time. Deaf children will catch up as same level of education as hearing children.
I have some questions; you are talking about CI for babies. I noticed some CI is 100 percent guarantee for all deaf babies. Some parents are getting High expectation that their babies with CI will raise like hearing children. What if CI is not functioning with some deaf babies? What Parents going to do with “Default CI” babies( I don’t what it is called and don’t meant to offend)? Send them back to deaf institute or what? Are you going to treat same education as CI and Deaf children? I am just curious what DBC should do with this issues.
Hope to see more details from DBC from you.

Rogue,
You ask very good questions. I don’t remember mentioning CI in my vlog, but I will doublecheck. Will you be willing to wait a few days before I vlog again and hopefully I will be able to satisfactorily answer ALL your questions then?
However, I would have to answer that there are indeed high expectations related to cochlear implants that Deaf children will be able to hear as much, or nearly as much as Hearing people at least.
Not all babies benefit from cochlear implants. This is why bilingualism is essential for ALL Deaf, regardless of whether they are implanted or not. ASL is the best visually accessible language we can provide in order for them to acquire language. Of course, we SHOULD also expose them to the English language.
It is best to expose babies to two languages in as many different contexts as possible from birth.
As for the rest of your questions, I will have to think on the best possible way to answer on another vlog post.
I need you to clarify: “Are you going to treat same education as CI and Deaf children?” so I won’t misunderstand you. Do you mean to ask if Deaf children with CI should have the same type of education as Deaf children without CI?
Thank you for your patience.

Thanks for responding my questions. Sure, I can wait for few days and give you more time to find the answers.
Thats correct, I mean Deaf children with CI should have the same type of education as Deaf children without CI?
Thanks!

Ben, I think you have to register with youtube then simply sign up on DVTV. I haven’t tried making video comments there yet. We are both newbies there, so we can learn together.
I guess people are all commented out, but that’s okay. At least everyone has more information on the DBC convention.
Anonymous 9:13 PM, LOL. Obviously I’ll have to wait till my kids grow up then I’ll have daughers-in law.
Bridget, thanks for stopping by here!

hi shelley again,
Excuse me! I had confused that you have fresh 2 vlogs of DBC: Emphasis on Bilingualism and DBC, THANKS! My comments are repeat issues on both your vlogs. Smile! So I deleted it.
Thank you for sharing information about five keynotes gave their lectures at DBC. Fantastic!
Oh Shelley, you don’t go to DDC 2008 in Calgary. I am going to DDC in this Tuesday, I will learn the workshop of deafhood next Thursday, three keynotes are Ella Mae Lentx, Genie Gertx and David Eberwein who will give their lectures about deafhood. My brain will get bigger and bigger, lol!
have a nice day! \,,/-

Hey, Shel!
A thrill that you and many many other Canadians were with us in Milwaukee! and thanks for sharing your reflections and what you learned from the speakers. I learned a lot myself too. We re starting to discuss the idea of proceedings of those amazing presentations. Any ideas, please throw them our way!
I look forward to more vlogs by you, Shel!

Hey Ella!
I know I speak for ALL of us Canadians when I say we were thrilled to be there!
I can honestly say that I didn’t do justice in this vlog to the sheer volume of ideas and concepts made by the presenters.
The points they made simply confirm my own observations as a bilingual person, educator and a mother of bilingual children.
You know what. I am STILL reflecting on the information presented.
Thanks for stopping by!
