This vlog is about my first experience with discrimination at a Canadian drive-through coffee and donut shop. I will type a blog about this experience in English at a later date.

Hi,
I had a similar experience at Burger King back when I lived in Rome, New York, USA.
This particular Burger King had audists working there. Unfortunately for me, that Burger King was the only fast food place for 20 miles.
After experiencing that situation 4 times at the same Burger King, one day I lost it.
I simply parked there and refused to move the car unless I got my order.
The manager came to the window and asked me what the problem was. I glared at the manager and I proceeded to explain that the cashier was discriminating against me and wanted me to go to inside.
The manager said “well, why don’t you go inside? What’s the big deal?”
At that point, I laid it all out- how that it’s an act of audism, how it’s discrimination, and how it is an action of a lowlife…
And said that as long as the manager condones it, he is a lowlife too. The manager read my message and was dumbfounded. I then proceeded to grab the note out of his hand while his jaw was gaping open…
Then I wrote, “well, the whole idea of having a drive in window is so that people like myself and the 30 other people behind me… Could grab the food and go in the comfort of our cars. That’s the whole idea. You are denying that service provided by your company because I am deaf, and that is discrimination, and only assh***s discriminate. The question is, are you an a**hole?”
The manager read the note and swallowed hard and then he said “I’m so sorry, I didn’t realize I was doing that. I am so sorry, what can I do to make things right?”
I took the note and looked at him and said “what do you think?” The manager swallowed and turned to the cashier and told her that she was fired. The cashier stormed out of there crying.
I then got my order and so did the other 20+ people waiting behind me.
Never had a problem again.

Hi Shel,
I have always gone to Tim Horton every day to get an extra large coffee (double double). Sometime I have gone to window to get it and sometime I have walked into it. So far, no problems but I have always kept it in my mind, “what if they deny my order at the window?” I hope it will not happen. I would blow my mind if I was denied to have it.

Anyway, when my family was visiting in Canada, we saw so many Tim Horton fast food restaurants! I have never seen a fast food restaurant that had a person’s name, ha! Who is Tim Horton?? What is their most popular food dish?
I think you handled the situation pretty well, however it would have been more helpful if you could have gone home and called the manager/owner and explain the situation to them and that you were not very happy with the workers there and that they need to improve services for the deaf. They need to hear voices from deaf people and the more they get feedback, they will be sure to try their best to improve their services. I wonder when you order at Tim Horton, do you have to talk through a speaker to make your order or just drive through and make an order through the worker? Just curious.

You were asked to move because you weren’t following the “classic” way of ordering at the drive-thru. So, I wouldn’t have moved. I’d stay there just like everyone else would say there to get what they came for to begin with. In America, most drive-thrus deal with it. What a waste of time for you to go around the drive-thru more than twice with five kids in the car. You have patience of a lion.

I had similar experience a few years ago when I went to McDonald’s. I was told to go inside to place an order. Naturally, I was dumbfounded by the person behind the cashier. I replied that I won’t move til I get my order through. The cashier got the manager who said the same thing. I decided to go ahead and park.
I went in and wrote a lengthy note citing that the action was definitely a ground for a lawsuit.
I asked for her name and store’s ID number. That particular manager was approached by other unknown person and she was “white faced.” Immediately, she changed her tone and offered me my order free of charge and added a few items.
I replied that I am not looking for freebies, but, the equal access and my rights as a customer.
She shed a few tears with customers looking at us. I thought she got the message and let it go.
We must constantly educating public.

You’re not alone..
Tim Horton at London,Ontario. Very rude remarkably, When I drove around through drive thru at Tim Horton and Cashier promptly say, you have to walk in.. I say No!, I ain’t walk.. I have a car right here.. My rights where I want order placed the donuts and coffee. Cashier refused.. So then I refused and ain’t move at all.. Unless you have to respect.. Somehow I spotted the Manager.. I did shouted the Manager.. I wrote the file complaint about Cashier have no respect treat Deaf Customer who want order the foods/drink. Manager really embrassing awful lot and decide giving me free coupons and free drinks and donut. After all, I have no idea what up to Manager talk w/their co-worker? I wish I could knew.. Only one the Tim Horton isn’t good service to Deaf Customer. That why I refuse go there exact place. I’d rather stick other Tim Horton.
